Bought a narrow band fuel\air gauge for my 96 Impala. The gauge has wires for Ign, earth and O2 signal. The O2 sensor on the Impala has 4 wires, two for the heater, one described as "signal" and one described as "low". Any idea which of these two, signal or low, should be connected to the signal wire on the fuel\air gauge?
regards,
George

A narrow band AF gauge on a fuel injected car is nothing but an annoying light show. The pcm varied AFR from rich to lean constantly just to make sure the O2s are responding. They are likely useful on carbed vehicles though, or non-feedback injected setups.

Scanner shows I'm getting knock retard at WOT where O2 feedback is not used by the PCM. I should be seeing a rich mixture at WOT. Also looking at other issues to track down the knock. Do these engines ever suffer from false knock?

George

How many miles? If lean, I'd question the proper spray pattern and performance of the injectors.

The engine is a Golen 383 stroker (9:1 compression), supercharged with about a 1,000 miles on the clock. Also alcohol\water injection cutting in above 4psi. Injectors are new 50 psi as reccomended by Golen. Programming is by Brian Herter.

In addition to the knock retard reported by the scanner (Autoenginuity)you can also feel the engine hesitating and missing over 5,000rpm. 1st run is the best, then gets worse with each run.

Figure it's either fuel mixture or Inlet air temp.

I do have a problem with under hood temperature (added a secondary fuse box and melted the plastic cover during my last visit to the track. Wish I'd included a ceramic coating on the Tri y's). I have an electric water pump and I have fitted, but not yet tested a cold air box and manual switch for the fans.

Added the air\fuel ratio gauge to confirm that I'm getting enough enrichment at WOT.

Since my original post I've received the info I was looking for from another forum. The wire that hooks up to the gauge is the purple or purple \whit stripe, depending on which bank's O2 sensor you are monitoring. Initial tests are that yes the digital reading bounces arround under normal driving, but does steady out at WOT. That was a quick road test, need to get to the track to fully test.

In addition to the above I've got a tank of 97 octane to try and see if that helps.

Any other advice or thoughts would be welcome.

regards,

George
